The Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) organised a discussion on the book on 7 August 2026. The discussion was led by Jinine Laishramcha, Assistant Professor, The University of Suwon, South Korea. The session explored critical questions surrounding the meaning and consequences of development in a world marked by rapid technological advancement, economic growth, poverty, violence and environmental challenges.
The discussion highlighted the role of education, development, consumerism and market-driven economies in shaping contemporary society. It also reflected on whether present systems of education and development are adequately enabling people to bring about meaningful social and environmental change. The speaker emphasised the need to balance human progress with the responsibility to protect the environment and ensure a liveable future while doing less harm to the planet.
The session also examined the wider implications of globalisation, capitalism, consumerism and market economies, particularly in relation to inequality and the distribution of resources. The discussion raised questions about the concentration of wealth and resources among a small section of society and the growing influence of consumerism on everyday life. These reflections encouraged participants to critically consider whether economic growth and technological progress alone can be regarded as indicators of genuine development.
The discussion concluded with reflections on the importance of unbiased rationality in addressing hardships and moving towards greater convenience and happiness. The session encouraged participants to critically examine prevailing approaches to development, education and social well-being, while recognising the need for a more balanced approach that considers both human aspirations and the well-being of the environment.
