CESS - DGS WORKSHOP
CESS DGS WORKSHOP

CESS-DGS organised a One-Week Workshop on Research Writing and Publication in the Social Sciences from 12 to 16 October 2026. The workshop aimed to strengthen participants with the essential aspects of academic research writing, research methodology, formulation of research questions and hypotheses, literature review, and the preparation of research publications.

Addressing the participants, Prof. Jeena T. Srinivasan, Dean, Division for Graduate Studies (DGS), CESS, emphasised that research writing is an integral part of the research process and should not be treated as a task to be undertaken only after completing data analysis. She encouraged participants to begin writing from the initial stages of their research and highlighted that research writing is not necessarily a linear process, as different sections, including the introduction and discussion, may evolve simultaneously. She also stressed the importance of interaction with resource persons, seeking clarification of doubts, and identifying the challenges researchers encounter while writing.

Prof. E. Revathi, Director, CESS, spoke about the nature and significance of social science research and its role in understanding human behaviour, society, and social institutions. She explained that social science research draws upon philosophical assumptions, observation, experience, reasoning, and methodological tools to examine social phenomena and generate knowledge. Emphasising the importance of reasoning in research, she highlighted the need to examine existing knowledge, apply appropriate research methods, and establish the validity and acceptance of research findings. She also discussed the contribution of social science disciplines, including political science, sociology, public administration, and business management, to understanding society and developing broader explanations of social behaviour.

The workshop provided a platform for participants to engage with resource persons, clarify their doubts, and discuss challenges associated with research writing and publication. Participants shared their feedback on the workshop and expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn and engage with various concepts and strategies related to research writing.

At the conclusion of the workshop, certificates were distributed to the participants by Prof. E. Revathi, Director, CESS, and Prof. Jeena T. Srinivasan, Dean, DGS, CESS.

Prof. Jeena T. Srinivasan and Dr. Srinivas Junuguru coordinated the workshop.
